White Grubs
White
grubs are the larvae of scarab beetles.
These larvae have C-shaped bodies
that are cream colored. They have a reddish-brown head
capsule and three pair of legs.
Chinch Bugs
Small
insects (adults are 1/5" of an inch) that are black and
white in color.
They feed by sucking juices from the leaves and
stems of the grass which will cause the grass to wilt and
discolor.
The turf will appear patchy and turn yellow and
then brown over time. Damage will be heaviest in sunny
areas, so it can be mistaken for drought stress.
Spider Mites
Spider
mites, often called red spiders, are so small they can
barely be detected with the unaided eye. These mites are
common pests on many different houseplants and seem to be
most damaging during periods of hot, dry weather.
Will cause grass to have a lack of vigor and a
pale or silvery discoloration. The
leaves of the grass will become yellow and eventually dry
out and die.
Damage appears as bleached-out or yellowish spots
on the infested leaves. Heavily infested plants become
stunted and may die.
Spider mites have a rapid life cycle under ideal
environmental conditions. Populations can explode in a short
time.
You may find fine webbing at the feeding areas on
the under surfaces of the grass blades.
Eastern Tent Caterpillars
The
Eastern Tent Caterpillar feeds on cherry, peach, plum,
and hawthorne.
The larvae form a tent in the
crotch of a tree very early in the spring. Larvae feed
inside the tent and expand the size as they grow. Larvae are
quite hairy and have a conspicuous white line down the
middle of there back.
There is only one generation per year
and most of the year including the winter is spent in the
egg stage. Egg clusters are laid on small twigs on the host
plant.
Adults are seldom seen except for
a few weeks when they can be found under lights.
